Brown hares boxing in March used to be a common sight in the UK but it is less common now because loss of habitat, hunting and other agricultural practices have reduced numbers by around 80 per cent.

March hares box because it is their mating season. Males (bucks) chase the females (does) across the fields in an attempt to mate. When a buck is too persistent and the doe has had enough, she will turn around and try to fend him off in a fierce boxing match.
